I finished the book! I think any southern has heard tales of Brer Rabbit all their lives, I can remember my brother telling me the story of Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby. I read it to my son.
I will say that after reading all these tales I don't blame all the animals for wanting to skin him., and boil him, and everything else. So I enjoyed when the turtle outsmarted him in the race.

Walking across AEgypt
I just finished "Walking across Egypt" Why are most of the southern writers we are reading from North Carolina?
1) I think religion was treated postitively, her church and the people in it seemed like most churches.
2) It needed to be a bit longer so somethings could have been cleared up, like did her children commit her when they found out she was taking Wesley in.
3) She reminded me of my Great Aunt Jane who cooked like Mattie, and my Mom who liked her stories on TV.
4) I wonder if she put so much into her church because her husband was when he was alive was gone alot and also because she does not have grandchildren.
5) This is her way of combatting lonliness.
6) One word "Strange"
7) I think she was joking to get a reaction from her kids, I hope it was the one she wanted.
8) I think teens could read this, I hope they would appreciate the humor.
9) On big issue is hardly anyone cooks like that anymore we are becoming and I believe will continue to be a fast food nation. Also people of Mattie's generation felt they had to marry and have children, women today do not have that need.
I liked this book it was funny and was a fast read.

A World made Straight
It took a while for me to understand why the entries from the doctor's journal were in the book, and it did help me to understand why some things were going on.
Leonard had read the journal and in a strange way felt guilty when he heard Travis' name. Travis and Leonard have in common Travis wanting to learn and needing a father figure and Leonard's need to teach and care about something.
Carlton Toomey was a simple man, he wanted money and power and a easy way to get them. I don't think there was anything sympathetic about him.
Travis has been told by his father and teachers that he will be in touble sooner or later, so he is headed that way if not at best he will be a farmer like his father.
Leonard should have fought the charges against him. Leonard seems to suffer from depression and makes a comment that his mother had had "dark days", and I did find him sympathetic, because in the end he did the only thing he could think of to save himseld, Travis, and Dena.
Dean had given up by the time she went with the Toomeys, and in her mind she was not worth anything.
This book was good it made you think of the motives behind peoples thinking and in the end there can be redemption.

Anyone who knows me knows I am crazy about my family. Also that I enjoy my job. I am from Arkansas, have been married for over 35 years and have a great son and the world's cutest grandson. I enjoy reading.
